Common questions
Why is the JPG heavier than the original?
That is expected. HEIC compresses about twice as efficiently at the same quality, so the same frame weighs more as JPG. Want it lighter? Drop the quality to 80% or run the result through compression.
Why does the first file take longer than the rest?
Your browser cannot open HEIC on its own, so the decoder has to be fetched: about a megabyte and a half on first use. After that it stays in memory. A 12-megapixel shot takes a few seconds.
Do the photos go to a server?
No. The decoder runs in your browser and the shots stay on your device — arguably the whole point for personal photos.
Can I avoid HEIC altogether?
You can: Settings → Camera → Formats → “Most Compatible”. The iPhone starts shooting straight to JPG, and files get roughly twice as heavy.
A file ends in .heic but will not open
Sometimes a .heic actually contains AVIF — common with files downloaded from “HEIC sample” sites. Our decoder handles HEVC, which is what the iPhone shoots, but not AV1, and it will say so plainly instead of failing quietly.
