Common questions
What happens to transparency?
JPG cannot do it, so transparent areas get painted with the colour from the settings. White unless you change it.
How much lighter does it get?
Several times over, usually. A photo that took 4 MB as PNG lands at 300–600 KB as JPG at 90% quality.
When should I leave the PNG alone?
When it is a screenshot of an interface, a diagram, or anything with small text. JPG smears hard edges and leaves a dirty halo around letters. For photos it is the other way round.
Will quality suffer?
JPG is lossy, so technically yes. At 90% you will not spot it on a photo.
