Common questions
How is this different from Save as PDF in Word itself?
It is not, if you have Word. The tool is for when you do not: someone else's computer, a phone, a browser open over a document that arrived by email. The conversion is done by LibreOffice — the same engine as in the editor itself.
Will the layout survive?
Usually yes. Arial, Times New Roman and Courier are replaced with metrically compatible faces, so lines and page breaks hold. Cyrillic is covered. A rare corporate font will be swapped for a similar one, and then the layout can shift.
What happens to my document?
It is passed to the conversion service, turned into a PDF and wiped immediately along with the temporary directory. Neither the file name nor its contents are written down anywhere. These are the only two tools on the site that need a server; the other fifteen run in your browser.
Which formats, and how large?
Word documents: .doc and .docx, up to 50 MB. A password-protected file cannot be opened — remove the protection and try again.
What if I need images rather than a PDF?
Take the neighbouring Word to JPG tool: it does the same thing and then splits the resulting PDF into page images right in your browser.
